DAY OF THE DEAD IN MEXICO CITY
OCTOBER 30th-November 4th 2027
Join Ahimsa Travel Club on an enchanting vegan group tour through Mexico City during the most sacred time of the year: Día de los Muertos. Imagine being immersed in streets filled with sugar skulls, glowing with candlelight, ofrendas built by local families to honor their loved ones and grand processions filled with music and spirits.
You will also have the opportunity to dress up and do Catrina face painting, with a local Day of the Dead artist.
We'll be based in Roma, one of the city's most beloved neighborhoods, with its tree-lined streets, Art Nouveau mansions, and a concentration of some of the best vegan restaurants in Mexico City. From here, we're just steps from Roma's own altars and neighborhood ofrendas, and a short walk or bike ride from Condesa's leafy plazas and cafes. Each morning we'll set out from this home base to explore the city's celebrations, then return to Roma in the evenings to unwind among its galleries, bookshops, and courtyard restaurants. In the evenings, we’ll make our way over to cemetery vigils and night-time celebrations. If you’d like to learn about how Mexico celebrates the sacredness of death through one of the most uplifting and life-affirming celebrations known to humanity, come join us on this tour.

DAY 2: MARIGOLDS EVERYWHERE AND WELCOMING IN SPIRITS AT THE CEMETERY
October 31st in Mexico City is one of the most magical nights of the entire Día de los Muertos celebration. While November 1 and 2 are the official days, the energy and festivities begin earlier. In the afternoon, we’ll start off by going to the Frida Kahlo museum where a special altar is set up in her home. See if you can feel her energy and presence return today! We’ll try a vegan pan de muerto with some local hot chocolate and a delicious lunch. Today you have time to get dressed up and get your face painted by one of the local artists as we walk around town. After exploring the town ofrendas and local markets, we’ll be visiting the local cemetery around 8 PM. Observe how families decorate graves with candles, flowers, food, and music as they gather to welcome the spirits of their loved ones. We’ll walk our way across the city where we will soak in the excitement of night vendors, music and spontaneous live parades with dancing skeletons.

DAY 3: A FAMILY HOME AND THE MEXICO CITY PARADE
It’s officially Day of the Dead and the best way to celebrate is with a local family. We’ll join our host family in preparing their Día de los Muertos altar, a sacred space filled with marigolds, candles, food, and offerings for their ancestors. Together, we’ll help set the ofrenda and participate in welcoming the returning souls, surrounded by the scent of copal. We will learn how death in Mexican spirituality is actually a continuation of life, with souls inter-connected no matter which phase of the after-life they are in.We'll close the experience with a heartfelt homemade lunch, crafted entirely vegan and inspired by local flavors, while sitting together at the family table. In the afternoon, we’ll make our way over to the incredible Day of the Dead Parade in Reforma. While 1.3 million visitors are expected to visit, this Parade is a not to miss to experience the incredible floats, music and festivities that take over the city. The crowds are not for the faint of heart, so come with your adventurous spirit! The evening is yours to walk around town, take in the spontaneous celebrations happening around the city and perhaps do offerings of your own for a loved one.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
DAY 4: TEOTIHUACAN AND FAREWELL TO THE SOULS AT THE ZOCALO
After breakfast, we'll journey to the breathtaking ruins of Teotihuacan, one of the most powerful ancient cities in the Americas, just outside Mexico City. As we walk among the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Avenue of the Dead, you'll feel the powerful echoes of a civilization that honored the cycles of life and death long before colonization. With sweeping views of the surrounding valley and a deeper understanding of the region's spiritual roots, this sacred site offers the perfect setting to reflect on all we've experienced.
Back in the city by afternoon, we'll dive straight into the electric energy of the Zócalo, where the monumental ofrenda glows against the cathedral and the whole square buzzes with music, face paint, and marigolds as far as you can see. Grab some street elote, snap photos with the giant Catrina sculptures, and take a quiet moment if you feel moved to, to thank the visiting souls for their presence, love, and guidance during these sacred days.
We'll close out the trip in true celebration mode: a vegan tasting menu at one of our favorite plant-filled restaurant in the city, followed by a night out for live music. Expect good food, good company, and one last dance before we say goodbye to the beloved souls that have visited us.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 5: A SWEAT LODGE CEREMONY AND A FAREWELL DINNER
Today we slow down and turn inward with a traditional temazcal ceremony, an ancient pre-Hispanic sweat lodge ritual used for centuries as a form of spiritual and physical purification. Guided by a local practitioner, we'll enter the domed lodge together, where heated volcanic stones, herbal steam, and ceremonial chanting create a powerful space for release and renewal. It's an intimate, grounding way to close out our time honoring the spirits, a chance to let go of grief, what no longer serves us and step forward feeling lighter and more connected, to ourselves and to each other. You have the afternoon free to reflect, go shopping or hop into cute art galleries. After some time to rest and reflect, In the evening, we’ll come together for a celebratory farewell dinner. We'll toast to the memories made, the spirits honored, and the friendships formed over the past week, closing our journey together the way it began: with good food, honoring our loved ones, and gratitude for everything Mexico City shared with us during this sacred season.
